Precious metals sold off, spot gold falls below $4200 per ounce, down nearly 3%

Precious metals were sold off on Monday, with spot gold falling below $4200 per ounce, currently at $4158, down nearly 3%.

The deadlock between the U.S. and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz has kept energy prices high, increasing pressure for the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates again, leading to lower gold prices. Gold has fallen nearly 6% this month.

Investors say that some central banks previously increased their gold holdings, but during periods of high energy prices, they sell gold reserves to protect their currencies. (yc)
